Warm-Up 3

Warm-Up 3 is all about turning informal, spoken language into formal, written language. The prompt is the kind of thing a health-and-safety officer might say when he's on a site visit, but the written version of his recommendations will use different grammatical structures and different words.

Remember that you've only got FIVE sentences to produce - you don't need to write the entire report.

    • Due the work environment and the kinds of tasks performed, such as lifting of heavy items, the employees should wear safety boots with reinforced soles and toecaps instead of the leisure shoes worn today.

    • According to the regulations, anyone entering the construction site must wear a hardhat.

    • The level of noise measured at the construction site indicates a need of ear protection, for which a good option would be helmets with ear muffs and, in addition, mesh visors.

    • The regulations clearly state that fences and safety barriers of appropriate measurements have to be set up before any work above ground level is started, because of the risk of injuries associated with falling accidents.
    • The test certificates for three excavators and one dump truck on site have expired, and the machines must therefore not be used before they have been examined at a authorized service station.

  3. The Swedish Health and Safety Executive refers to the existing regulations which requires the building site to have safety barriers as well as to be fenced-in to mark off the area from its surroundings.

According to Swedish safety rules all workers need to wear proper work boots with reinforced soles and toecaps.

Furthermore wearing approved safety helmets is a matter of course.

To avoid face injuries and hearing impairments it is recommended to wear helmets with face protection and ear defenders.

It stands to reason that all machines, diggers as dumper trucks, must prove to have authorized test certificates.

  4. • Workers are made to wear boots with reinforced soles and toecaps due to a potentially hazardous work environment.

    • Safety equipment such as helmet should be used by Workers before entering the site.

    • It is recommended the use of ear protectors by the workers. Helmets that have built-in ear muffs and a mesh to cover the face can be an alternative.

    • Fences and safety barriers are necessary to guarantee the overall protection of workers on building sites.

    • Machinery whose test certificates have expired should not be back into service.

  6. Firstly it is mandatory that the workers are using working boots with soles and toecaps to avoid them hurting themselves in case of accidents. Secondly, for ear protection of the workers, we are obliged to arrange helmets with built-in ear muffs. Thirdly and according to the requirements here in Sweden, we have to install fences and safety barriers whenever we build above the ground level.

As the test certificates on our tree diggers as well as on our dumper truck have run out we are furthermore obliged to urgent take them to a test station. Lastly the inspector is worried that it might be some leaks in the hydraulic systems on a couple of our plants and he has suggested that we shall take them to an authorised mechanic. // Annica Dahlberg

  8. The workers have to wear boots with reinforced soles and toecaps to avoid injuries on account of the heavy lifts.

All visitors and workers have to wear helmets when they enter the building site.

As a result of the building site is above ground the regulations demand fences and safety barriers to avoid accidents.

To avoid hearing impairment all workers must use helmets with built-in ear muffs.

All diggers and dumper trucks must be tested to receive a valid test certificate. No trucks without certificate are allowed to be used at the building site.

  9. To meet Swedish rules and regulations concerning health and safety on building sites our workers ought to wear proper work boots, with reinforced soles and toecaps.

Safety helmets should also be acquired since they are compulsory work wear on a building site; no-one is allowed to enter the construction area without wearing an approved safety helmet.

Due to the noise level at the building site our workers are obliged to wear ear protectors, recommended are helmets with built in earmuffs and mesh to cover the face.

It is also essential for us to ensure that the building site has fences and safety barriers of proper height everywhere constructions are performed above ground level.

Valid test certificates are required for all the machinery used on the building site and it is critical for us to renew expired certificates for three diggers and a dumper truck, since they now are forced to be taken out of service.

    • The contractors’ working conditions are not complied with the Swedish directives.

    • No safety shoes were utilized on the building site, which contribute to unnecessary risk of injury.

    • The utilization of hardhats was inadequate, since hardhats are compulsory within the building site.

    • Safety equipment, such as railings and safety barriers, were absent on the building site.

    • The building site machinery was not legitimately certified, and an inspection is required before the machines can be brought back to service.

  11. In Sweden a company is obliged to follow the Swedish legislation, which might otherwise lead to closure.

Every worker has to wear expedient work wear including a safety helmet which advantageously should have built-in earmuffs.

In addition it would also require proper work boots, with soles and toecaps, to ensure workers safety.

Strict safety rules are specified for usage of fences and safety barriers in order to prevent falling accident.

Since there are machines at the site with expired certificates, they have to be recertified before they can go back in service again.

  12. Swedish rules and regulations for safety need to be followedm and undertaking this will consequently lead to closing down the business.

Approved safety helmets must be worn wihtin the construction site at all times. These helmets are tentatively equipped with built-in ear protectors and a mesh to cover the face.

To avoid fall accidents the company must attend the strict rules about fences and safety barriers when building above ground level.

It is required that the employees wear work boots with reinforced soles and toecaps to avoid injuries in case of dropping heavy items or stepping on pointed items on the ground.

  15. 1) We need to provide the workers with appropriate work boots, in other words, boots with reinforced soles and toecaps.

    2) Helmets are not an optional choice for the workers, there are obligatory.

    3) We are not able operate at this location unless the workers are wearing an approved safety helmet.

    4) For the moment we are not allowed to use the machines, and they require a service inspection before they are usable.

    5) The diggers and the damper requires an immediately inspection by an authorized mechanic, and for at least two of them there are leaks in the hydraulic systems.

  16. There may be differences' in the regulations in Sweden and China, however in Sweden rules and regulations must be followed and if they are not you lose the right to continue the business.

There are major risks in not having adequate safety shoes on a construction site, for that reason your employees needs to wear proper safety shoes that have both reinforced soles and toecaps.

Wearing protective helmets is an obligation in Sweden, therefore you must not let anyone have access to the construction site unless thay have an approved safety helmet on.

In Sweden we have strict rules concerning fences and guard rails since people can get seriously hurt if falling down, due to this fact it is your duty to provide the required fences and guard rails where you build up scaffolding.

You have four machines whose test certificate has expired, those machines should be examined by and authorised mechanic and must be tested and approved in order to be operated again.

  18. 1. There are a number of safety regulations concerning working sites in Sweden, in order to avoid work related accidents.
    2. One of the regulations prescribes that the workers must wear approved safety helmets and proper working boots.
    3. Another regulation concerns the noise level at the work site. The level seems to be normal for the working site in question, but the workers should wear helmets with built-in earmuffs to avoid future hearing-impairments.
    4. There must be fences and safety barriers of a proper height as soon as the building is above the ground level.
    5. In Sweden they are very strict with the conditions of the working vehicles. To ensure the state of the vehicle, they test it and receive a test certificate. The certificate is limited in time and needs to be renewed at a certain point.

  19. 1) The Swedish Health and Safety Executive, who recently visited our construction site to inform us about current rules and regulations, had some remarks which we have to adjust to, else we might have to close down.

    2) First of all, due to the perilous conditions surrounding the men at the construction site, it is obligatory that every worker wear suitable work boots, with reinforced soles and toecaps. 3) Secondly, all people who enter the area of the constructino site are required to wear approved safety helmets. 4) Helmets worn by the working staff should be equipped with visor and appropriate hearing protector. 5) Thirdly, to avoid injuries associated with falling accidents, any construction work carried out above ground level must first be equipped with fences and safety barriers, that follows the regulation standards.

  20. According to the Health and Safety Executive the securities are very inferior for our construction workers at the construction plant in Sweden, they also point out that we have scarce security on our diggers and a dumper truck, and that their test certificate has expired.

My recommendation is that the items below should be attended to at once, otherwise we risk hindering the construction, which in turn leads to the strong delay of projects and dissatisfied customers.

Our workers need approved protective clothing which protects the head, body, shoes, eardrum and hands; furthermore we have to install lifting equipment for handling of various heavy objects to prevent current and future damages.

Workplaces should be secured with fences and safety barriers according to the Swedish safety directions, luckily so far no one has slipped and falled down.

Our three diggers and a dumper truck whose test certificates have run out should as soon as possible be repaired and approved so they pass the test certificates and can be used again in the construction work.

  21. I have to be sure that the material, tools and equipment which are imported will meet the Swedish work conditions as well as the laws.

To clarify myself I am going to give some examples: the staff needs to wear proper work boots with steel-toe-cap which is not the case at the moment as I saw staff wearing trainers. All workers as well as visitors have to wear accepted helmets for the purpose when they enter the building site. Around the work area there is a need for fences and safety barriers and all the diggers and dumper need to be possessed of a valid certificate.

We do not have those rules and prescriptions to obstruct the work, the purpose is to minimize the risk for injuries.

For those companies that operates in Sweden and not observe this regulations regarding working conditions there could be legal consequences.

To improve the security level of the workplace the healthy and safety department strongly recommend using helmets that have built-in ear muffs and a mesh to cover the face.

According to Swedish regulations it is compulsory to wear a helmet when entering a site; your company should not let any one enter your site with out an approval helmet.

All machinery used at the site must be examined be an authorized mechanic before taken in to use otherwise they are considered as risk and will be taken out of service.

For the safety of your employees we strongly recommend that all building carpenters wears proper boots made for working under the current conditions of the workplace to avoid injuries.

  23. Chinese and Swedish working conditions are different. So in order to continue our business relationship in good terms I suggest you read the following safety regulations, imposed by the Health and Safety Executive, which can not be ignored in Sweden.

First, because workers are lifting heavy sacks, proper work boots with reinforced soles and toecaps are required in order to protect their feet in the event of an accident.

Moreover, hardhats are necessary on the building site. According to the Swedish regulations, nobody is allowed to work without a safety helmet.

Thirdly, due to noise level in the work environment, ear protectors are also recommended, such as a helmets with built-in ear muffs and a mesh to cover the face from flying debris.

Then, fences and safety barriers at the proper height are compulsory for any building above ground level to guarantee the employees security.

Finally, engines used in the building sites, like diggers and dumper trucks, have to conform to the Swedish norms. That means they must be ratified by a Swedish test station which issues a certificate to allow the use of the machines.

  27. In order to adjust the construction process in accordance with labor regulations and safety requirements in Sweden the following measures should be taken:
    1. To prevent appearance of commuting accidents in form of injuries of the personnel on the construction site the following compulsory working uniform should be introduced:
    a. Specialized work boots, with reinforced soles and toecaps
    b. Head protector helmet with built-in ear muffs and plastic face screen

    2. As the construction process ascend above the ground level it is compulsory to equip the construction site with fences and safety barriers at the places of personnel’s accessibility
